Naming the Birds
by Irene and George Alexander
It's been a long, cold, Nebraska winter,
but now spring is in sight bringing with it the exciting
seasonal bird migration. We're not speaking just of the cranes
and waterfowl here, but also of the many songbirds and other
species that either pass through this part of the Great Central
Flyway, or arrive in spring to take up residency for the
warm season and to raise a family. As they all mingle with
the numerous species that live here permanently, will you
know the names of them all?

If you are a beginning birder
or if you feel the need of a review of birds you've learned
previously and wish to learn more, you're invited to join
our annual Basic Bird Identification
class offered jointly
by Wachiska Audubon and Pioneers Park Nature Center. Beginning
April 8 there will be four Tuesday evening indoor classes
and four (carpooled) Saturday area field trips led by longtime
experienced birders. The last three Tuesday evening classes
will be preceded by shortened field trips at the Center.
Fees for the class are $45/person and,
along with expenses, are shared equally by Wachiska and the
Nature Center. For more details and to register by the April
4 deadline, call 441-7895.
